July 2010

somehow this address got onto some computer generated ‘hit machine’ – ok, don’t really know the correct terminology or how it works.  i just know there were a TON of hits on here for 3 days straight – using a weird search phrase.  i’m certain there were NOT that many individuals looking for something about painting plastic chairs!! 🙂  i know when bobbie first got her webpage up and running, she was so excited about having gotten like, 15,000 hits.  soon realized they weren’t “real”.

had second session of the new ‘block of the month’ class yesterday.  it is going quite well and everyone seems happy.  there were 13 the first month and i know at least 2-3 indicated they couldn’t make the second month date.  so, i was happy with the turnout of 9.  and it looks like a few will take advantage of the free second session that is part of the ‘drop in’ day next tues.  if you live near drytown, or would enjoy a day trip to this scenic area and could use a few applique tips – come visit with us at The Old General Store in Drytown.  that’s on hwy 49 between plymouth and jackson.

ok, it’s off to work i go.

big word, that – at least in practice!  i am looking at a very long stretch of days/weeks with no show.   have a trunk show and class, but even those are not till end of august.  ok, there is the ongoing ‘block of the month’ class in drytown – but that doesn’t require a lot of prep.  the other thing is – what there is at the end of this loooong down time is HUGE!!  back-to-back shows that are a long distance away. (that will mean about 2 weeks spent ‘living’ in the van).  and the second one is a biggie and one i’ve never done before = don’t know what to expect.  on top of that, i will be teaching a mini-class while there – on 2 of the 4 days!!

so, here’s the real problem. ^_^  i know me – at least i know the me i’ve been up till now.  and that pattern would be to fritter away the time until i am ‘down to the wire’ and must become super productive in order to finish it all on time!  my goal is to ‘recreate’ myself, so to speak.  push myself to do something ‘productive’ each day.  here’s the part that makes it even more challenging – i also now have a part time job!  that means i am gone some part of most every week day!!  like yesterday – left here just before 9:00 and didn’t get back till after 4:30!  the last hour or so of that was spent on the walking trail (yea!) – still, it rendered me ‘useless’ in terms of the business!

so here’s what i know about human nature in general – ‘promises’ made to another person are much easier to keep than those made ‘in secret’/to yourself. ^_^    so, i am hoping a committment to sharing progress and completions on here will help to keep me motivated.  feel free to send a comment/message to ask how something is coming along. 🙂

i have just made a long list of all the things i could think of today that i’d like to complete before i head out to walla walla, wa and portland mid-sept.  first on that list – the pin cushion kits i need for the classes!!  i asked how many people the room can hold, to get a feel for the max possible.  32 –  yikes!  do i expect that many?  perhaps not – still, must plan for that many.  that’s each class.  so, am figuring it would be good to have 85-100 of those little kits so they have some choice.  i normally sell those with everything you need except the ‘stuffing’. however, in this case, i must include the stuffing as well.  the rules ‘demand’.  no, we won’t finish in the class – that could require a sewing machine to create the actual pin cushion to be ‘stuffed’.  but the kit must have everything required to finish the project (at home).  so – on top of cutting the squares & hearts, pinning down the hearts, and providing a needle that is threaded with matching color thread – i must also stuff little zip bags with enough polyfil to stuff the pin cushion.  i currently have 45 complete thru needle/thread and 25 with pins only.  i don’t even have any polyfil right now – the one item missing from my last order – can you believe it!!

the second item on the list is another rack – for the mini’s!  goal is to complete that this weekend – with a little help from tom (he doesn’t know yet – i think i have better luck if i just ‘surprise’ him = ask for some help in the middle of doing) 🙂

good grief – maybe i need a nap first! ^_^

and so, another ncqc ‘meet the teachers’ has come and gone.  i was in the very first group this time – soooo much better!!  got to enjoy everyone else without feeling like i was about to ‘hurl’ and having trouble breathing.  what, me nervous?!!!    i felt ok about my presentation this time, still a bit shakey, but managed to say what i wanted about the class(es).  and got a few ‘laughs’ – always a good thing.  however, as i mused about it this morning i realized i had still ‘missed the mark’.  my class is so ‘specialzed’ and has limited appeal – i mean, folks are mostly looking for the latest and greatest new fast/fun thing to do.  not so many there to find out who can show them that thing their grandma used to do.  😦

so, another lesson learned – pitch the trunk show also!!  don’t just add it as an ‘after thought’.  let them know it’s available and make them laugh a little more in the process!!  it IS a good trunk show – if only for the quilts!  some (very) old, some new – a (very) few done by me.  all lovely to look at!  and my words about my life – light and humorous.  i know all guilds are looking for programs – that’s often what gets people to meetings!  altho, my name may not be one that draws a sellout crowd – still better than nothing at all! ^_^

so, if you are here reading this as a result of the handout you picked up – please do still consider me. 🙂

thought i’d post a picture of how the booth looks now.  have made some significant changes – for the better, i think.  first, i changed the drape color.  have been considering this for at least a couple years.  thought i’d go the ‘cheap’ way again, and see if i could find black sheets and make them into drapes.  then, i realized that to order them from the same place where i bought the poles was nearly a ‘no brainer’.  i mean, 4’x8′ panels, with a sleeve on each end, pre-fire proofed – for just $15 each. my time way more valuable than that! ^_^

and then there is the rack.  copied my friend kieth’s idea (from blue petunia).  didn’t turn out exactly as planned – in terms of how it fits into the van, etc.  however, am liking it functionally.  cuts way down on setup time.  in fact, i am determined to build another, slightly different, for the mini’s.  those are another significant time-hog for both setup and take down!  how do the new racks save time, you ask – they travel pre-loaded!! ^_^  so, here’s a couple pictures of the ‘new look’.

now it’s time to get busy with the next one.  will be a 2 panel folding screen type and will sit in a back corner, i think.  stay tuned. ^_^

isn’t this how your work table looks in the middle of making a quilt?? oh, maybe not!  ok, not making a quilt – finally covering the arm of my chair!  while the duct tape repair i had done (using everyone’s favorite all-purpose material ^_^) worked ok while it was cool – not so much in the heat!  got really tired of my arm sticking to it!!  so, just did it!  why the mixer piece, you may ask.  well, i kept looking for something to use to hammer the staples in with – my stapler too fat to fit between the sides of the arm, so staples not really into anything well enough to hold.

and here it is – the first one done!!  will hopefully do the second when i get back from work today.

isn’t it beautiful!! 🙂   am also going to see if i can do the seat.  there’s nothing wrong with it that a good cleaning won’t cure, but – would just look better, i think.

ok, time to head for shower and get to office.

for those of you who might have visited here before, like way last summer – you may remember – you know it’s really summer when this beautiful creation goes up. ^_^

no, you are not seing double.  for all these years i have resisted adding one to the bedroom window.  did not want to give up my view of the night sky. 😦  however, the stupid  mini-blind finally drove me to it.  i mean, what good is something that is 90% non-functional?!  yes, it would go up and down – but if it won’t ‘close’???? -well,  not exactly what’s ‘wanted and needed’ in this hot calif. sun!  and now that i am gone working most mornings – sometimes get home late afternoon and the sun is already blasting in.

so, how’s your applique coming? ^_^  i haven’t created anything new for awhile.  am currently teaching a class at the shop in drytown.  it’s an ‘experiment’ – using the blocks for the beginner wallhanging and doing a ‘block of the month’.  hoping it develops into something more with them.  if not, at least they will have a pretty good foundation for their real projects.

nothing new with regard to the house situation.  i have completely ‘turned it over’, so it’s out of my hands!!  just doing my best to remain in Faith and Trust.  oh, there is one bit of news – i’m gonna be a grandma again. ^_^  and here’s a picture of aaron – he has grown a lot since last we spoke!!!  oops, just spent a long time looking only to realize it’s probably not on this computer.  dang – another day!
